1878. NEW ZEALAND. LANDS RESERVED FOR THE PURPOSE OF GRANTING THEM TO MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS (RETURN OF).

GMHJB,J.KJN.

SCHEDULE.

(Memo.) General Survey Office, Wellington, 23rd July, 1878. There are thirty-one applications for endowment under section 350 of " The Municipal Corporations Act, 1876," which, with the five passed last session—-Lyttelton, Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Akaroa, and Timaru—make thirty-six in all since the Act became law. Of the thirty-one now to be considered Thames will have to be postponed, as the selection made is Native land still under negotiation. It is impossible in many cases to grant what is asked, as will be seen in remarks of accompanying list. Fresh selections accordingly have had to be made on behalf of some of the Corporations. These have been made on the principle that large Government townships were entitled to greater consideration than small private townships. Care, however, has been taken that each selection would he of sufficient value to let as a farm or small run. James McKerrow, The Hon. the Minister of Lands. Assistant Surveyor-General. I.—o. 6.

ENDOWMENT RESERVES applied for under section 350 of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1876."

Application. Name of Corporation. Provincial District. Area asked for. Area proposed to be proclaimed. Remarks. Dec. 21, 1877 Auckland City ... Acres. 2,000 The land applied for is part of the Patutahi Block, Poverty Bay. The Cook County Council, on the 11th February, 1878, addressed the Auckland Waste Lands Board, trusting that the Northern Boards and Southern Boards of Auckland Province would be confined, in their selection of endowments, to their respective districts. The Waste Lands Board passed a resolution confirmatory to this. A selection has been made accordingly of 1,500 acres, Section 1, Block V., Punikatere District, near Hokianga. This is recommended by Chief Commissioner and Chief Surveyor, Auckland. Adduces as a reason why endowment should be granted, that ratepayers have to maintain main street through borough, which is an outlet from Auckland to the country, towards which expense no grants in aid are received, nor does the borough possess any land endowment whatever. A selection by Chief Commissioner and Chief Surveyor has been made of Section 2, Block V, Punikatere District, area 1,000 acres. Has 7 acres 2 roods 4 perches of endowment within township and 4 acres 28 perches as water reserves, 5 acres 1 rood 31 perches for public gardens, and 2 acres 3 roods 30 perches as a site for a market. A selection by Chief Commissioner and Chief Surveyor has been made of 1,000 acres, Section 3, Block V., Punikatere District. Has no endowments. Very heavy traffic on streets in the conveyance of quartz to batteries stated as a reason why endowment should be made. Ask for Waihou West Block No. 1. The purchase from Natives does not seem to be completed yet. Sir George Grey, on 27th March, 1878, requested Hon. Mr. Sheehan to instruct Mr. Puckey to endeavour to purchase the land desired within the borough, the Municipality undertaking to refund to Government a part of purchasemoney if it should exceed sum sanctioned by Government. The first application was for Puketoi Block No. 1, which was refused, not being Crown lands. On invitation of Minister of Lands a second selection was made of a portion of Pukerangi Block, on main road, six miles from Woodville. To this selection the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Napier, says there is no objection ; land broken and rather inferior ; has large frontage to main road. This land, Section 163, Totara District, has been open for selection since 1868. It is on the Kohutahi River, about thirteen miles from Hokitika ; recommended by Waste Lands Board. Apparently not much value. The Waste Lands Board, Canterbury, on 28th January, 1878, in answer to application from Mayor of Sydenham, asked Crown Lands Office to reserve Section 30493 = 1,655 acres, and Section 30494=345 acres, of Ashburton County. It does not appear from papers that land was reserved. Applies for land order to select 2,000 acres.
