No. 98. —Petition of Hoei Heeehbee and 4 Others. Petitionees pray for a rehearing in connection with Tahoraiti No. 3. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for the purpose of having an inquiry held into the matter by some person other than an officer or officers of the Native Land Court, as the petitioners appear to have suffered a wrong through an omission on the part of their agent. 2nd August, 1899.

No. 246, 1898.—Petition of Te Hata Hokopauea and 34 Others. Petitionees pray for rehearing in connection with Maraehako Block. I am directed to report that, as this petition refers to a case similar to.those contained in the petitions of Haka Tautahi and 11 others, Tamati Eu and others, and Erueti Tiketikerangi and 19 others, on which the Committee reported during the session of 1898 (see 1.-3, 1898, pages 17 and 20, Appendix to Journals), it should be referred to the Government with a similar recommendation —viz., " That the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court be asked to exercise his powers under section 43 of ' The Native Land Laws Amendment Act, 1895,' in order to determine whether the last judgment is in accordance with what may be settled upon as Maori custom and law." 4th August, 1899.

No. 22.—Petition of Ceadock Beauchamp, of Anikiwa, Picton. Petitioner, who is the lessee of a Native reserve in Queen Charlotte Sound, prays that the law be amended to enable him to surrender his present lease and obtain a new one providing for compensation for improvements, as was done under the West Coast Settlement Eeserves Act in the case of certain Native reserves in the North Island. I am directed to report that the Committee recommend that this petition be referred to the Government, with a view to having legislation introduced to enable cases of this kind to be dealt with in an equitable manner. Bth August, 1899.

Petitionee prays that grants of land may be made to each of his children, the descendants of an influential Maori ehieftainess, who, under certain circumstances, was deprived of her rights in Native lands in the Taranaki and Wellington Districts. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for inquiry. 10th August, 1899.

I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government, with the recommendation that legislation be introduced to enable the petitioners to obtain the rehearing prayed for. 11th August, 1899.

No. 101.—Petition of Hoani Tainui and 2 Others. Petitionees pray that section 12 of " The Westland and Nelson Native Beserves Act, 1887," may be amended so that an order can be issued directing the Public Trustee to pay over to the descendants of Wereta Tainui all moneys in connection with the sale of Block 7, Native Beserve, at Greymouth (Te Nikau). I am directed to report that, as the question of appointment of successors to Wereta Tainui is still pending before the Native Land Court, the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 17th August, 1899.

No. 307. —Petition of Ihaia te Awanui and 5 Others. Petitioners complain that they have not been put in possession of a small piece of land near Kaikoura, Marlborough District, which one Walter Gibson gave in exchange for 247 acres, part of Parangarahu No. A Block; in consequence they now claim to have a right to the last-mentioned land, and pray for consideration. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th October, 1899.

Final Eepoet. I have the honour to report that the Native Affairs Committee held its final meeting yesterday morning. Including the 47 petitions held over from last session, the Committee had before it 154 petitions. Of these, 64 were fully considered and reported on ; the remaining 90 are unavoidably held over. A list of the unconsidered petitions is appended hereto. The following Bills were referred to the Committee and duly reported on, viz.: The Native Reserves Act Amendment Bill, and the Maori Lands Administration Bill. In connection with a number of petitions relating to the last-named important measure a large amount of evidence was taken, which has been printed, and will appear in the Appendices to the Journals.
