No. 189, 1898.—Petition of G. A. Hieschbebg. Pbtitioneb alleges that through a legal technicality he is unable to complete certain transactions in connection with leasing portion of the Ngawakaakupe No. 3 Block, Wairarapa. He prays that legislation may be passed to enable him to bring the matter before the law-courts. I am directed to report that the Committee, having again gone thoroughly into this matter, finds that it can make no recommendation. 6th September, 1899.

Petitionees pray that the rivers in the neighbourhood of Kaiapoi, Canterbury, may be exempted from the restrictions as to taking whitebait with set nets. I am directed to report that, as the Committee is advised the Government is issuing regulations dealing with this question, it has no recommendation to make. 7th September, 1899.

No. 284.—Petition of Henaee Haeeetuteeangi and 18 Others. Petitionees complain that great injury is caused through the practice of the Native Land Court in regard to the rights of adopted children, and they pray for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that, as the question referred to involves so many issues in relation to the disposition by the Natives of their lands, the Government should carefully consider the matter, and take such steps as will determine what should be done to avoid hardship or injustice being done to the relatives of deceased Natives. 7th September, 1899.
