No. 146.—Petition of W. Feanklin Beowne, of Wellington. Petitionee prays that grants of land may be made to each of his children, the descendants of an influential Maori ehieftainess, who, under certain circumstances, was deprived of her rights in Native lands in the Taranaki and Wellington Districts. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for inquiry. 10th August, 1899.

I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government, with the recommendation that legislation be introduced to enable the petitioners to obtain the rehearing prayed for. 11th August, 1899.

No. 101.—Petition of Hoani Tainui and 2 Others. Petitionees pray that section 12 of " The Westland and Nelson Native Beserves Act, 1887," may be amended so that an order can be issued directing the Public Trustee to pay over to the descendants of Wereta Tainui all moneys in connection with the sale of Block 7, Native Beserve, at Greymouth (Te Nikau). I am directed to report that, as the question of appointment of successors to Wereta Tainui is still pending before the Native Land Court, the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 17th August, 1899.
