No. 98. —Petition of Hoei Heeehbee and 4 Others. Petitionees pray for a rehearing in connection with Tahoraiti No. 3. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for the purpose of having an inquiry held into the matter by some person other than an officer or officers of the Native Land Court, as the petitioners appear to have suffered a wrong through an omission on the part of their agent. 2nd August, 1899.

No. 246, 1898.—Petition of Te Hata Hokopauea and 34 Others. Petitionees pray for rehearing in connection with Maraehako Block. I am directed to report that, as this petition refers to a case similar to.those contained in the petitions of Haka Tautahi and 11 others, Tamati Eu and others, and Erueti Tiketikerangi and 19 others, on which the Committee reported during the session of 1898 (see 1.-3, 1898, pages 17 and 20, Appendix to Journals), it should be referred to the Government with a similar recommendation —viz., " That the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court be asked to exercise his powers under section 43 of ' The Native Land Laws Amendment Act, 1895,' in order to determine whether the last judgment is in accordance with what may be settled upon as Maori custom and law." 4th August, 1899.

No. 22.—Petition of Ceadock Beauchamp, of Anikiwa, Picton. Petitioner, who is the lessee of a Native reserve in Queen Charlotte Sound, prays that the law be amended to enable him to surrender his present lease and obtain a new one providing for compensation for improvements, as was done under the West Coast Settlement Eeserves Act in the case of certain Native reserves in the North Island. I am directed to report that the Committee recommend that this petition be referred to the Government, with a view to having legislation introduced to enable cases of this kind to be dealt with in an equitable manner.
