STAMP DUTIES DEPARTMENT

(a) This is a grant of death duties properly paid and for the remission of which there is no provision in the Death Duties Act, 1921. Grant made on grounds of undue hardship. (b) This is a special grant to be made to the New Zealand Methodist Foreign Mission Society as rebate of succession duty on legacy in estate of Samuel Gorman, deceased, and to provide part compensation for mission property in the Solomon Islands destroyed during the war, the estimated cost of replacement being £90,000. (c) This is a grant of death duties properly paid and for the remission of which there is no provision in the Death Duties Act, 1921. (d) Additional expenditure necessary on account of removal of Christchurch District Office from Government Buildings to other premises. £350 provided on main estimates. (e) Investigation mado in England by Mr. P. G. Pearce, late Commissioner of Stamp Duties. (/) Document was not liable to stamp duty. (g) Pound-for-pound subsidy on net profits paid to the National Patriotic Fund Board. £40,000 provided on main estimates. Appointment of additional field inspectors and surveyors in connection with 'settlement of servicemen necessitates the purchase of additional vehicles, replacement of worn-out vehicles, and supplying Government vehicles where previously private cars were used on a mileage allowance. (c) For use by officers of the Milk Marketing Division in travelling to various centres to consult with local bodies in respect to the provisions of the Milk Act, 1944, and for visiting areas providing milk for town consumption for purpose of consulting local producers and treating interests in respect of national price structure. (d) Local-authority levies : This amount is required to reimburse milk vendors for amount paid to local authorities by way of levy on milk. Under the Milk Act, 1944, local milk authorities are empowered to levy all milk sold within the milk district with per gallon to cover costs of administration. As the price of milk is stabilized and vendors' margins are fixed by the Minister of Marketing, it is necessary for the amount to be met by way of subsidy.

(a) Repairs to Post and Telegraph Department's car damaged whilst hired by this Department. (b) During the current year the Director of the Plant Chemistry Laboratory visited the United States of America to study the latest developments in the field of anti-biotics (£640), whilst two officers from the Plant Research Bureau and the Soil Survey Branch are visiting Australia to attend conferences on linen flax and soil problems (£175). Amount on main estimates, £1,770. (c) A Fats Research Laboratory has been set up for the primary purpose of investigating the composition of New Zealand butter in view of the serious competition expected from margarine on the English market. (a) New appointment. (It) Salary at the rate of £900 per annum payable from fith September, 1944. Provision for arrears to 31st March, 1945. (c) Provision for appointment of five Assistant Matrons at health camps and one Consulting Medical Officer. (d) Grant towards cost of mobile x-ray unit with which it is proposed to carry out mass x-ray examinations of Maoris and pakehas in the Taranaki, Hawera, Stratford, and Patea Hospital Districts. The Taranaki Maori Trust Board is contributing £2,200 towards the unit, which will be vested in the Hawera Hospital Board as trustee for the associated Boards.
