ORDERS OP REFERENCE.

Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 29th Day of September, 1937. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all Bills and other matters relating to mining which may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Bodkin, Mr. Denham, Mr. Herring, Mr. Holyoake, the Hon. Mr. Lee Martin: Mr. Moneur, Mr. O'Brien, Captain Rushworth, Mr. Thorn, and the Mover." — (Right Hon. Mr. Savage, for Hon. Mr. Webb.) Thursday, the 30th Day of September, 1937. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1936 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Savage.) Wednesday, the 3rd Day of November, 1937. Ordered, " That the Coal-mines Amendment Bill be referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Webb.) Tuesday, the 16th Day or November, 1937. Ordered, " That the Petroleum Bill be referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Webb.) Wednesday, the 24th Day of November, 1937. Ordered, " That the Petroleum Bill be referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Webb.) Friday, the 26th Day of November, 1937. Ordered, " That the Mining Amendment Bill be referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Webb.)

REPORTS.

Coal-Mines Amendment Bill. I am directed to report that the Goldfields and Mines Committee, to which was referred the Coal-mines Amendment Bill, has duly considered the same, and recommends that the Bill be allowed to proceed subject to the amendments shown on a copy of the Bill attached hereto. 15th November, 1937.

Petroleum Bill. I am directed to report that the Goldfields and Mines Committee has heard some evidence on this Bill, but, in view of the fact that Native land is affected by the Bill, the Committee is of opinion that it cannot come to a final decision until the Bill has been considered by the Native Affairs Committee. The Committee therefore recommends that the Bill be referred to the Native Affairs Committee and thereafter again referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee. 23rd November, 1937.

Mining Amendment Bill. I have the honour to report that the Goldfields and Mines Committee has carefully considered the abovementioned Bill, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed without amendment. 30th November, 1937.

Petroleum Bill. I am directed to report that the Goldfields and Mines Committee, to which the Petroleum Bill was referred has carefully considered the same, and recommends that the Bill be allowed to proceed subject to the amendments shown on a copy of the Bill attached hereto. 2nd December, 1937.

No. 156.—Petition of Inez G. Finlayson, of Waihi. Praying that she be granted a compassionate allowance on account of the death of her husband, allegedly due to having contracted pneumoconiosis while employed in the Waihi mines. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 14th March, 1938.

No. 155.—Petition Of Eva M. Capper, of Waihi. Praying that she be granted a compassionate allowance on account of the death of her husband allegedly due to having contracted pneumoconiosis while employed in the Waihi mines. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 14th March, 1938.

No. 178.—Petition of W. C. Sarich, of Ellerslie. Praying that he be granted a miner's phthisis pension. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 14th March, 1938.

Special Keport. I am directed to report that at its final meeting the Goklfields and Mines Committee expressed, by resolution, its appreciation of the services of the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. Anderson, and directed that I should so report to the House. J. O'Brien, Chairman. 14th March, 1938.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Goldfields and Mines Committee unanimously passed the following resolution : " That this Committee places on record its appreciation of the competent manner in which Mr. O'Brien, as Chairman, has conducted the business of the Committee, and of his impartial interest therein, and recommends that this resolution be reported to the House." A. F. Moncur, a Member of the Committee. 14th March, 1938.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that during the session the Groldfields and Mines Committee, consisting of ten members, has held eight meetings, with an average attendance at each meeting of six members. During the session the Committee had three Bills and four petitions referred to it, all of which were duly considered and reported to the House with the exception of one petition which is held over until next session. J. O'Brien, Chairman. 14th March, 1938,
