OREPUKI.
We have had quite a plethora of small exsitements of late. They started with Mr Carmichael’s address to the Orepuki electors on the evening of the Bth inst. He had a good audience, and made out a very good case for self and party, but did not seem to secure the sympathy of the electors. The meeting was not at all like an Orepuki one, as the rowdy element was rather too prominent. A vote of thanks resulted. Next came Orepnki’s gala day, the Prince of Wales Birthday, which, for a wonder, was all that we could desire. The special train from Invercargill carried the largest number of passengers that ever arrived in Orepuki in one train. The sports held under the auspices of the Orepuki Athletic Club were a great success. The takings at the gate totalled £4B 12s—a record for Orepuki. The Pipe Band took immensely. All the events were fairly well contested, but local sports were seemingly not in it. A concert and ball wound up a very enjoyable day, and proved a great financial success, panning out £24. Then we had the Warden’s Court on Wednesday, at which a lot of business was done, not only in mining matters but police business —two assault cases, two prohibition orders, only one of which was granted, and several applications for mining privileges, also two rather intricate mining disputes, all of which were dealt with finally. We also had the Wyndham schools excursion, and the great number of visitors found this out of the way settlement just the place for a day’s outing. They brought a cricket team, and a scratch match was played with an Orepuki team, which resulted in a win for the visitors. On Thursday evening Mr Gilfedder addressed the largest meeting of the kind that has been seen in Orepuki. His reception was enthusiastic. He spoke for two hours, and carried the audience with him, receiving a vote of thanks and confidence. A vote of thanks in the present Government was also passed.
