WAIANIWA.

We are enjoying real genial summer weather very different to what we experienced at the beginning of last week. Fruit trees suffered considerably from the severe hail showers. Both grain and grass crops

are looking well; farmers are getting the ground ready for turnip crops; and shearing will soon be started. The Waianiwa Orchestral Society has not been in rehearsal for a considerable time, owing to some of the members being absent from the district. About a fortnight ago a meeting was held to see whether the society would voluntarily wind up or reorganise, and I am pleased to say that it was decided to continue. Mr Geo. King was elected conductor in place of Mr Jas. Blue, who has resigned owing to demands on hie time. Mr T. W. Stevenson was appointed Secretary, Mr J. L. Wilson having resigned, and Mr Dugald McPherson was appointed Treasurer. The annual meeting of the Waianiwa Athletic Society was held on the 11th inst. The society has a credit balance of £l4 odd in hand. It was decided to hold the sports on the 29th of December. Tbe following officers were appointed : —President, Mr J. P, Wilson; Vice-President, Mr F. Boyd ; Secretary, Mr 0. Mooney ; Treasurer, Mr T. W. Stevenson. The best concert ever held in the Spar Bush district was given in the hall on Friday, the 10th inst., in aid of the hall funds. Mr John McCrostie acted as chairman. The concert opened with a selection by Miss McCrostie (piano) and Mr J. Robertson (violin). Solos were rendered by the Misses Ferguson, Dundas and Cunningham, and Messrs Broad, J. Bell, W. Swale (Invercargill), Miss Brown, and Messrs Lawrence and Forbes (Waimatuku), Mrs Noble, Mr Stockwell, and Mr G. Bennie. The accompanists were Miss McCrostie, Miss Brown, Mrs JSoble, Miss Dundas and Miss Ferguson. The concert was followed by a dance, music being contributed by Messrs Stewart, Lawrence, Robertson, Bell (violins), and W. Swale (piano). Mr Thos. Swale acted as M.O. During the dance several songs were sung. Mr J. Ferguson danced a hornpipes, and Mr J. Bell a jig. Refreshments were kindly supplied by the ladies of the district, and Mrs Cockburn placed her piano at the disposal of the committee.
