OTAUTAU.

Great gloom was cast over the township last Friday, when it became known that a boy named Jamesoa, from Makarewa, who along with his mother was staying here for a holiday, had been drowned while trying to cross Jacob’s River near Ringway Siding. An old resident, MrManson, passed away very suddenly on Saturday evening last after a brief illness. He leaves a wife and one daughter (married). The regular meeting of the Court was held on Wednesday before Mr Poynton, S.M., when differences were adjusted. The monthly sale was held on Wednesday, when stock of all kinds sold well. The influenza epidemic is raging here, and is following the lead of the Presbyterian church collectors a house to house call, and, strange to say, gets more names on its list, too. Tbe opinion here is that Mr Carmichael’s prospects of election for Wallace are of the brightest. The Town Hall was packed the other evening, the occasion being a school concert. About £ls was taken at the door. The programme was a very good one, and the entertainment reflected < great credit on the headmaster, Mr Rowe, Miss Greenslade, mistress, and Mr Gilchrist, assistant teacher.
