QUEENSLAND’S RICH MAN.

Mr James Tyson, the Queensland squatter, is dead, aged 78 years. Beginning life as an overseer on a station at £3O a year, he ended it the possessor of a fortune estimated at from five to eight millions sterling. He first made money as a batcher and afterwards as the owner of a number of stations. He subscribed liberally to local hospitals, offered to lend the Government money when they wanted it, didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, eschewed matrimony, preferred steerage to saloon when at sea, and generally reduced his personal expenses to the lowest It is said that when he was appointed to the Legislative Council he threatened to resign sooner than don a dress suit at the opening of Parliament, but those who knew him best declare that although keen in matters of business, he was open handed and liberal when satisfied that help was really deserved. The disposition of deceased’s wealth is likely to give work to the lawyers, for no will has been found, and some of his relatives have had the property placed in the hands of the curator of intestate estates, pending further action.
