FOUND DEAD-NAME UNKNOWN.

The late Vincent Pyke drew a pathetic picture in one of his book of the lonely deaths that frequently occurred in the early goldfields era, when many a brave fellow perished far from home and kindred. His words are recalled by the fate of a poor old swagger, who was found dead on the roadside near Tapanui. At the inquest one of the witnesses said that he saw the deceased alive on Saturday last. He was sitting down, leaning on his hands. Witness did not speak to him, and on Monday morning the man was found dead. The medical evidence proved that deceased had taken a strong dose of arsenic powder and water. No clue as to his identity was found. He passed away unfriended and unknown. A sad ending, truly—it is difficult to forget that solitary figure by the wayside, sans hope, sans friends, sans everything that made life worth living.
