PUPILS’ CONCERT.
The concert given by Mr Zimmer and his pupills in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Thursday evening was fairly well attended. The programme opened with a piano duet (Overture ‘Titus’) by Misses Helen McKenzie and Jenny Johnston which was well played. Misses Kitty Rogers and Ida McKenzie gave Schubert’s ‘ Sonatina in D. op. 137’ for piano and violin, and acquitted themselves well, one feature of their performance being that they kept excellent time, and were always well together. Mr Frank V. Raymond was not very successful in his song ‘My Memories,’ being completely off the key in the last verse. Miss Ada Snrman's piano solos, ‘Sonata Pathetique’, and ‘ Capriccio,’ by her teacher, Mr J. J. Zimmer, were undoubtedly the best performances of the evening, her execution in the last-named being very brilliant. For this she was recalled. Miss Muriel Howorth has a very fine touch, bat seems to lack expression in her playing, otherwise her piano solo, Arr., Opera, ‘ Ernani ’
was well played; and she received hearty applause. Miss Clara, Surraan’s | song, ‘ Ave Maria,’ was sung very sweetly, but was somewhat marred by the accompaniment being 1 too loud at times. Miss Glare was the other lady singer, her song, ‘ Hush me, O, Sorrow,’ suited her voice admirably, but her enunciation was defective—a fault which can easily be remedied. Handel’s ‘Largo’ for piano, organ, and strings, by Misses Kitty Rogers, Florence Rogers, Jane and Charlotte McKenzie, Howorth, Gresham, and Mr J. J. Zimmer (’Cello) was a very enjoyable item. A piano duet ‘ Arr., Quartet in G. Minor ’ by Spohr, by Misses Gresham and Muriel Howorth, brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Mr Zimmer is to be congratulated on the high state of proficiency his pupils have attained under his tuition.
