Musical Notes.

(By “ Staccato.”)

A social, in connection with the First Church, was held in the Zealandia Hall on 2nd December, and was a decided success. A very enjoyable musical programme helped to make the time pass quickly. Two selections (Scotch and English) were given by a -string band under the leadership of Mr J. McGregor. The first one could have been improved with a little more rehearsal, but they made up for this in the last, which went very well indeed. Mrs Blue gave a new song, ‘ Life’s Lullaby,’ in her usual efficient style. Miss Innes’s choice was ‘ Lochnagar,’ and she was loudly applauded. Miss M. Mair was not very successful in her song, * The Flight of Ages.’ Mr Walter Smith was in good voice, and sang ‘ The Last Muster,’ while Mr Wm. Lillicrap’s rendering of ‘ The Angel at the Window’ was the success of the evening, his flue soft singing in the piano parts being a treat to listen to. Miss McChesney and Mr D. Thompson gave a duet, ‘ The Elfin Call,’ which was well received. The choir gave two anthems under the able conductorship of Mr Wm. Quinn. The accompaniments were very well played by Mr Nimmo and Mr Wm. Lillicrap.

I understand that the Musical Union have postponed their next concert, which was to have taken place this month, till February, next year. * St. John’s Eve ’is the work selected, and, I believe, a musical treat is in store for all who attend.
