MATCH ON SATURDAY A tennis competition match was played at Hinds between Lynnford and .Hinds Clubs on Saturday last. Following were the results (Hinds names mentioned first):

Successful Paddy’s Market

The Hinds Centennial Hall was more than comfortably filled on Friday evening last when all the stalls comprising the Paddy’s Market, held to raise funds for the school, did good business.

The function was a great success socially and financially, the proceeds amounting to .approximately £llO. This success was due to the generous support given by parents and friends of the school, arid to the energy shown by those in charge of the . various stalls.

During the evening those present were entertained by blindfold boxing bouts staged by the pupils, and conjuring by Mr O’Brien, of Mayfield. Those in charge of the various stalls were: Sweets, Young People’s Club; cakes, Mesdames Douglas, Donaldson and Parrish; meat, Messrs Reith, Howden, Good and McLaren; produce, Messrs Lowe, Good, Ellis and Frampton; flowers, Mesdames Lewis _ and Small; jumble, Mrs Gourlay, Misses Gunn and Chisnall; supper, Mesdames Elms, Hawke, Parsons, Lowe, McKeage, Robertson and Donaldson.

At the conclusion of the function the chairman thanked all who had helped by stocking the stalls and by being such good customers, and made special reference .to those who manned the stalls. Their help and generosity was very much appreciated by the School Committee, he said.

Jubilee Meeting

The residents of the Hinds District gathered in the school last evening to decide on a function suitably to mark the 70th anniversary of the school

A committee was elected as follows: Patron, Mr H. C. B. Withell; chairman, Mr C. D. Chisnall; secretary, Mr Gourlay; treasurer, Mr A. Grayburn; committee Mesdames Hawke, Bird, Morris, Miss S. Bird, Messrs'L. Chisnall, J. Morris, A. Hawke, f S. McKeage, C. Elms, W. Holland, A. Robertson, J. Davidson, H. Montgomery, M. Daly, J. Farrell, A. Dalton. The committee decided that a worthwhile centennial celebration be included in the school jubilee celebration to mark the province’s centennial in the district.

The jubilee is to take place on January 4 and 5, 1951, and a programme was drawn up as follows (subject to alteration) : _ Opening ceremony and roll-call, to be held at the school 6n January 4, followed by a banquet; centennial procession on January 5, and a sports meeting in the local Domain, this to be followed by a grand ball. The general committee was thefi divided into sub-committees to deal with each event, as follows: Opening ceremony, Mr H. C. B. Withell, Mr and Mrs Morris; banauet, Mr J. Davidson, Miss S. Bird, Mrs A. Hawke; procession, Messrs J. Farrell, C. Elms, L. Chisnall, A., Hawke; sports, Messrs A. Grayburn, A. Robertson, S. McKeage; ball, Miss S. Bird, Messrs A. Dalton, W. Holland, A. Grayburn.

LYNDHURST NOTES TENNIS CLUB OPENING DAY There was a large attendance at the Lyndhurst Tennis Club’s opening day, held in fine weather. • Visitors were present from Highbank, Winchmore, Rokeby and Ashburton.

The president (Mr R. Lilley), in welcoming visitors and members, thanked the visitors for patronising the country clubs in spite of other tennis openings held that day, and wished them all success and pleasant games during the season.. Mrs H. F. Burdett opened the season by hitting the first ball.

Winners of the Yankee tournament were Mrs G. I. Low and R. Lilley, while runners-up were Miss R. Prebble and J. Hunt.

A very successful dance was held in the Lyndhurst Hall in the evening, ending a most enjoyable day. Messrs J. Taylor and J. McKendry acted as masters of ceremonies. Music was supplied by Cook’s Band.
