WATERFRONT INQUIRY
POWERS TO BE GIVEN TO CHAIRMAN (P.A’) WELLINGTON, Oct. 17. The chairman of the Royal Commission on the Waterfront Industry (Sir Robert Kennedy) will hold the full powers as well as the formal status of a Supreme Court Judge. He will also have the right to subpoena witnesses if it is thought.desirable. This authority will be contained in legislation which has now been drafted and is expected to be introduced in the House of Representatives soon. If the passing of the Bill is delayed the commission is still expected to assemble about October 25. Although' the Waterside Workers’ Union has declined to participate in the waterfront inquiry, the. commission’s powers could enable it to call union representatives to give evidence, i A subpoena of this, sort would have the same effect as if issued by the Supreme Court.
