N.Z. POTATOES
POSSIBLE AUSTRALIAN MARKET (Rec. 11.20) CANBERRA, This Day. Trade and political sources predict that the Minister of Commerce and Agriculture, Mr J. McEwen, will permit the importation of New Zealand potatoes to ease the current shortage. Mr McEwen said he understood the New Zealand Government wishes to export 5000 tons of potatoes to Australia. It would not be reasonable for consumers to seek something which would have a permanent detrimental effect on Australian industry, or for the Government to consider such a request. On the other hand, if the Australian potato industry could not supply public demand, the industry should not capriciously resist limited importation. The best solution might be negotiate an amicable agreement with the New Zealand Government.
