ROBBERY HAS SEQUEL

FASHION DESIGNER ARRESTED ANONYMOUS TIP RECEIVED /N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) (Rec. 12.15 p.m.) , PARIS, Aug. 16. The world-famous Parisian fashion designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, was arrested at Nice airport tonight as she was about to boar.d a plane from Tunis, according to the French News Agency. The police said they found in her possession jewellery she claimed to have been stolen from her during a Riviera robbery earlier this month. A £27,000 sterling jewel robbery was reported at the Villa le Roc GolfeJuan residence of Mrs Norman Winston, an American society hotesss, on August 6. Madame Schiaparelli was among the guests. After Schiaparelli had been questioned for six hours, an official police statement said to-night that an anonymous tip had been received that Schiaparelli had recovered some of her jewels, “but would not tell the police.” The police said they found in Schiaparelli’s luggage two diamond clips and part of a brooch which were among the jewels she reported stolen in the Villa le Roc robbery. The police said they also found 1458 dollars in America* currency which, they said 1 , had not been declared at the customs, and which were “concealed in a notebook from which pages had been cut to enable the notes to be fitted in.” The police said they were forced to carry out a personal search of Schiaparelli, Undeclared dollars were confiscated by the customs, who warned Schiaparelli that she might be charged with infringing the exchange laws. Late to-night the police went with Schiaparelli to Villa le Roc where they seized the rest of her baggage.

After questioning, Schiaparelli was released on provisional liberty, and a senior police officer said he would ask for a charge under French legal formula for “contempt of the examining magistrate” while the police were conducting inquiries.
