NEW GUINEA
DUTCH SOVEREIGNTY ESSENTIAL
DEVELOPMENT FOR SELFGOVERNMENT tNZ. PA.-Renter— Copyright) (Rec. 10.55. X THE. HAGUE, June 20. Dutch sovereignty over New Guinea should be continued after 1950 in the genuine interests of the people of New. Guinea, said the Netherlands Union and Realm ■ Affairs Minister, Johannes Van Maarseveen, in the First Chamber of Dutch States. He declared that Holland’s task was to develop New Guinea. . That meant in the first place that the people must be raised from the present ptimitive level'of civilisation. “Indonesia is absolutely incapable of taking over this task from Holland at the moment. I do not doubt the good will of -he Indonesians, but good will is not enough.” The development work Holland would carry out in New Guinea, he said, was the same that Dutch policy had tried to achieve in Indonesia this century- Their aim was “to bring the people of New Guinea to such a level of cultural, social, and political maturity that they are able to take their fate into their own hands and administer themselves.”
