JAPANESE PEACE TREATY

CONFERENCES IN TOKIO TOKIO, June 20. Top-level American conferences in Tokio designed to determine whether a peace treaty or some other arrangement is desirable for a Japanese settlement, enter their second phase tomorrow. Mr John Foster Dulles, Republican adviser to the State Department, will return to Tokio from Seoul for conferences with General MacArthur and Japanese leaders. The Defence Secretary (Mr Louis Johnson) and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (General Omar Bradley) have already heard General MacArthur’s views. According to present plans there will be no joint conference of Mr Dulles, Mr Johnson, General Bradley and General MacArthur, although State Department and defence Department recommendations regarding Japan will ultimately be co-ordinated in Washington.
