EXPLOSION ABOARD SHIP
CREW TAKE TO BOATS (Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 11. The Norwegian freighter Geisha (5113 tons) radioed this afternoon that the crew were taking to the lifeboats after an explosion aboard the ship. Coastguard headquarters said the freighter gave her position as 680 miles south-east of Newfoundland. ■ A coastguard cutter and a number of merchant vessels had set out at full ' speed for the area in the belief that the freighter was “in dire distress.” The commander of the international ice patrol in Newfoundland has been requested to assign a search plane. The coastguard said there were about 30 men aboard the Geisha, which was bound from Panama to Antwerp. The seas were moderate. The Italian freighter Maria Paolina later radioed that she had rescued all 30 of the Geisha’s crew, who had abandoned the Geisha after the explosion. All were.well and uninjured.
