AUSTRALIAN MINISTER OULINES PLANS

* CANBERRA, March 7.

The Federal Minister of the Army (Mr J. Francis) said to-day that the trials of Japanese -war criminals would begin on Manus Island about the middle of April/ They would probably last for five or six months. The definite date for beginning the trials depended on the completion of arrangements for the transport of court officials and witnesses from Australia.' Some at least of these would be flown to Manus. Equipment for building a compound to house the prisoners had already been sent from Australia. Mr Francis added that so far 102 alleged > war criminals had been arrested in Japan. Two others had died, and 16 were still at large.
