NEW YORK, March 7.
Judith Coplon and , Valentin Gubitchev were to-day found guilty df espionage and conspiracy. Coplon, aged 28, is a former employee of the Federal Department of 'Jusitice. Gubltchev, aged 33, a Russian engineer, was an officer of the United Nations at the time of his arrest.
Coplon was acquitted of passing United States Government secrets to an unauthorised person, but was found guilty of attempting to dp so. Gubitchev was found guilty of attempting to receive and obtain United States Government secrets.
The first count of the indictment, on which both Coplon and Gubitchev jointly were found guilty, charged them with conspiracy to commit espionage by removing secret documents from Government files and to defraud the United States of Coplon’s services. Coplon is already under sentence of from 40’months’ imprisonment to 10 years’-imprisonment for similar conspiracy charges in Washington, but has appealed against the conviction. The defence attorneys said that they would ask that the verdict be set aside because it was arrived at “in an air of confusion.” ■
