STRUGGLE MAY BE NECESSARY
TRADE ON INDONESIAN MARKET

Exporters believe that a struggle will -be necessary to establish Australian products on the Indonesian market as a result of the lifting of the five-year-old ban on Dutch shipping by the Australian Maritime and other unions. - <
' Australian exporters hope to build a trade with the Indies which will be worth £5,000,000 a year to Australia. Since the ban was imposed it .is estimated that trade worth £40,000,000 had been lost. Australian imports from the Netherlands East Indies varied between £6,000,000 and £10,000,000 annually and included rubber, pepper, cinnamon, sago and spices. The chairman of the Consolidated Import and Export Group (Mr J. Litchfield) said he had received offers from Indonesia of tea, below Ceylon’s price, and coffee cheaper’ than Brazilian.
The Federal secretary of the Australian Importers’ Federation (Mr A. J. Birch eaid: that last May, Indonesia imported from other countries, including -America, Canada and South Africa, flour worth £1,250,000, milk products worth £655,000 pharmaceutical products worth £54.000, machinery worth £1,054,000, fertilisers worth £55,000, and electrical gear worth £300,000.
