A verdict of death from self-inflicted wounds was returned at the inquest in Wellington into the death of Helena Klimenko, aged 49, a Ukranian displaced person and a European qualified doctor, who had been workings as a domestic steward at the Wellington Hospital. Witnesses said that Klimenko was found in a bath'at her flat ’with, deep wounds in the crook of each elbow. Puncture wounds were found in her chest over the heart after she died on the way to the hospital.. “This is a sad case,” said the Coroner, Mr Mellish/ “In her native country she was a qualified doctor, but could not practice her profession in this country because of restrictions, which required her to requalify in New Zealand.—and properly so.” He added that deceased had fallen into depression, and life held nothing for her.
Evidence was given that Klimenko had been living in a flat with her 17-year-old daughter since they arrived from the Pahiatua camp some months ago.
