FANTASTIC PRICES
REPORTED DEALINGS IN URANIUM LONDON, Jan.-6. The Swiss Atomic Energy Commission declared to-day that “unscrupulous dealers” were trading in uranium at fantastic prices, reports the Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press.
The sale and purchase of uranium, the radio-active element used in the production of atomic energy, is not controlled by the Government in Switzerland.
The statement by the' Atomic Energy Commission said that uranium was at present one of the most dangerous commodities of speculation. Such transactions involved great risks and were against the interests of Switzerland. Dr. Alfred Krethlov, a. member of the atomic energy commission, said the origin of the uranium sold by speculators was not known, but it must have come from a foreign source. “We frequently receive reports of uranium being offered at prices at least 1.0 times • the normal market value.”
Dr. Krethlov said that the quantities offered were usually too small for atomic research, but speculators tried to dispose of it to persons who regarded uranium merely as a fruitful investment.
