SCANDINAVIAN DEFENCE
SECRET MEETING OF MINISTERS
(Rec. 9.40.) STOCKHOLM, Jan. 6. The Prime Ministers of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, with the Foreign and Defence Ministers of the three countries, held a secret meeting at Karlstad, a Swedish town near the Norwegian frontier, to-day to discuss Scandinavian defence problems. An official announcement says' the Ministers discussed “conditions for collaboration in the defence policies of Scandinavian countries.” A Swedish Foreign Office Communique announces that another meeting of Ministers Avill take place at Copenhagen after the conclusion of the work on the Scandinavian Joint Dei fence Committee.’
Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says that the meeting is believed to have been precipitated by the United States’ invitation to some or all of the Scandinavian Powers to take part in an Atlantic Union conference. Sweden wishes to preserve a position of complete neutrality. Norway and Denmark are increasingly in favour of an alliance with the West. It is considered possible that Norway and Denmark might agree to join an Atlantic Union even if Sweden refused.
