CLAIM FOR ALLEGED LIBEL
HEARING MAY CONTINUE FOR A WEEK (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. The-case in which the president of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage League, Dove Myer Robinson, proceeded against the Mayor of Auckland and the. chairman of the. Metropolitan Drainage Board, John Andrew Charles Allum, and Wilson and Horton, Ltd., for alleged libel was continued before Mr Justice Northeroft in the Supreme Court to-day. Plaintiff is claiming £SOO damages from each defendant for a statement published in the “New Zealand Herald” on' November 18, 1947. The statement was made by the Mayor in reply to a pamphlet issued by the Drainage League. Under cross-examination by Mr A. K. North, K.C. (for Allum). Robinson admitted that he “had probably been a member of the Communist Party 25 years ago.” ' The case is expected to last until about the middle of next week. Plairitaff’s evidence and cross-examination was continued throughout the, day, and he was still in the witness box when the court adjourned until tomorrow morning.
