FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 8, 1898). High School Board—The Ashburton High School Board met on Tuesday. Present: Messrs Andrew Orr (chairman), Chapman, Stitt, Denshire, and the Hon. Major Steward. The report of the inspector of reserves was read, and was considered satisfactory. The board resolved to communicate with the Minister for Education with a view to obtaining assistance for enlarging the building to admit of technical education. The date of the breaking-up for the Christmas holidays was fixed for December 15, and it was resolved that the Hon. W. C. Walker, the Minister for Education, be invited to attend and distribute the prizes. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 8, 1923). Shakespeare Society—The Ashburton Women’s Shakespeare Society held an elocutionary competition on Wednesday. It was open to girls under 18 years, for own selection from Shakespeare. The judges were Mrs E. Ruddock and Miss M. Arnott. The competition resulted: —Phyllis Liddell (High School) 1, Alice Sewell (High School) 2, Hilda Templeton (Technical School) and Nena Buchanan (High School) (equal) 3. Appointment: Miss J. Swap, who has been for four years assistant mistress at the Borough School, has been appointed assistant mistress at Dower Hutt, Wellington. Miss Swap will commence at her new school after the Christmas vacation.
