LIQOUR AND THE MAORIS

CONCERN OF BISHOP BENNETT (P.A.) NAPIER, December 6. Concern at the possible effect on the Maori people of amendments to the liquor laws was expressed to-day by the Bishop of Aotearoa, (the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett). ‘“I feel very anxious and perturbed about the future of the Maori race now that protecting legislation regarding intoxicating liquor for the Maori has been removed,” said Bishop Bennett. “Those of us who remember the bad old days when there was no restrictions, when barrels of liquor were brought into native settlements, and when men, women, and children were to be seen at many tangis in a state of intoxication, feel very anxious and nervous about the future.” He asked whether the Government might not have done something to destroy much of its good work for the Maori. He appealed to those who had th highest interests in the Maori at heart to see that, strict measures were taken to ensure that the growing population in native settlements was preserved from the far-reaching effects of such a. dangerous traffic.
