TELEPHONING TO AIRCRAFT
EXPERIMENT FOR POST OFFICE ; , . / :. ; ■ .■(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April. Commenting on the coupling of the Skymaster aeroplane over the Tasman Sea with the. New Zealand telephone system by radio-telephone this morning, the .Postmaster-General (Mr F. Hackett) said this was somewhat of an experiment as far as the Post Office'was concerned. There was no regular service to either inland or overseas. air-routes. Radio telephone calls could he effected to a number of overseas ’countries and to the inter island, steamer Hinemoa during her voyages. Later there would be a similar service to and from the Monowai when she took up the Tasman run. The calls were handled to-day by the Post Office in the same way as ship to shore calls, said Mr Hackett. The shore equipment for the ship service was used. So far there had been no demand for telephone services to aircraft., but as passenger air services developed it was expected that the demand for this type of service would arise. The Post Office expected a considerable _ development of radio telephone services in the next few years, and to meet, this plans had been made to install additional terminal radio equipment.
