BRAUND CANCER TREATMENT
Red Cross Helps N.Z.
Patient
TARANAKI CHILD FLYING TO SYDNEY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 1. A three-year-old hoy and his parents from Taranaki will leave New Zealand by air to-morrow for Sydney for the' child to undergo the Braund treatment for cancer. The child is suffering from inoperable cancer, and all treatments in New' Zealand have been of no avail.
Every assistance for the Australian trip has been given by the New Zealand Red Cross Society. The decision of the New Zealand Red Cross to help in this case has been made in spite of advice from the Australian Red Cross to postpone the visit. A representative of the Red Cross in Wellington said to-day that a country doctor had recently telephoned the secretary-general (Mr M. S. Galloway) saying that he was dealing with a case of a child suffering from inoperable cancer. There had been no response to treatment, and the outlook for the child was anything but hopeful.' Request from Parents Wishing to leave no possible cure untried, the parents, hearing of the Braund treatment in Sydney, resolved to try it. Because of the circumstances it was necessary for the father and mother to make the journey with the child. The question asked by the parents was; “Can the, Red Cross help us?” - ' Immediately the New South Wales division of the Red Cross was cabled and details of the case were given and co-operation asked. The reply received said the New Zealand Red Cross representative strongly advised that the visit be postponed until the report 'of the Government investigation into the Braund work was made public. Since then the report had been released and, although it was not altogether favourable, the parents resolved to take their child, and arrangements for the departure of the family by air on Friday had been completed. The Red Cross in Sydney has been advised by cable to meet the party and to do everything possible to promote its comfort and good will. The New Zealand headquarters of the Red Cross Society has sent the following telegram/'to the parents : “We trust that your mission will be blessed with success.”
