BETTER LAMBS IN DEMAND

SMALL ATTENDANCE AT ADDINGTON (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. The store sheep entry at the Addington stock market to-day totalled 20,470, comprising 3000 lambs, 3070 two-tooth ewes, 1.1,700 aged ewes and 2100 wethers. The lamb entry was more even in quality than recently. The attendance was small, but the market for better lambs was good at values Is dearer than last week. Others held last week’s prices. Best made 20s to 2Ss, medium 2.1 s to 255, and small and backward 15s to 20s. The two-tooths were a good lot, but interest was limited, and there was an average decline in prices from last week of 3s. The best price for openwooded sorts was 54s and for finewoollcd 40s (id. Good crossbreds made 30s Od to 35s and others 20s to 28s Gd. Best fine-woolled made 35s 6d to 40s Gd, good 27s Gd to 325, and others 19s to 26s Gd. Among the aged ewes were several lines from the Chathams, Otago, Marlborough and d’Urville Island. The sale was poor throughout, and little interest was taken. Good 4-year halfbreds were worth 22s Gd to 28s, and others ISs to 21s. Aged halfbreds made 20s to 26s for best, and others 11s Gd to 19s. Best 4-year crossbreds made 26s to 32s Gd and others 22s to 255. Good aged crossbreds made 20s to 24. s and others iGs to 19s. A few large lines of Chathams and d’Urville Island wethers offered for sale made well below the best of a month ago. Best sold at 35s Gd to 37s 6d, and others 31s to 34s Gd. The fat lamb entry was 1911, and the quality was good. The offering was too large for requirements, as the works are congested. Choice lambs sold, well at last week’s rates, hut freezing sorts were up to 2s cheaper. Values: Extra prime fat lambs to 47s 7d, prime 37s to 41s, good 31s to 365, medium 27s to 30s, light. 23s to 265. Ashburton sales were : R. Frisby (Eiffelton), 54 at 44s 7d to 47s 7d; O. E. Hooper (Lauriston), 36 at 31s Id to 37s 4d: The fat sheep entry was 5000, and the quality was the best for some time. The market for freezing ewes was limited. Choice wethers and butchers’ ewes sold well at last week’s prices. Values: Extra prime heavy wethers to 57s 7d, prime heavy 45s to 50s, prime medium weight 4(te to 445, ordinary and light_ 35s to 395; prime heavy ewes to 35s 7d, prime 25s to 295, medium 20s to 245, ordinary and light 14s to 19s. R. J. Moore (Eiffelton) 43 wethers 45s 7cl to 50s Id, 23 maiden ewes 40s 7cl to 45s Id ; R. Jamieson (Winchmore) 34- wethers 35s Icl t0.45s Id; O. E. Hooper iLauriston) 28 wethers 80s 7d to 42s 7cl; W. J. Copland (Chertsoy) 72 wethers 36s 4d to 38s Id; E. S’. Johnstone (Winclnnore) 62 ewes 32s 7cl to 25s 7cl. The fat cattle entry was >530, including a long’ “tail” of secondary cows. Best beef met a, limited demand at last week’s values, but the remainder was 20s easier. Best beef made to 60s per 1001 b, good 42s 6d to 50s, medium to 40s, best cow beef to 40s and secondary to 36s 6d.
