CITY REFUSE TIP COMBED

Search for £4OO in Currency

LARGE AMOUNT RECOVERED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 27

What must rank as the fairy story of the year had a happy ending to-day, when a man who lost £4OO in notes and silver had the pleasure of seeing the greater portion of it uncovered by a bulldozer and a band of voluntary workers at the city refuse tip.

The money had been missing since Tuesday, when it inadvertently got mixed up with the contents of a refuse bin in a city cake shop. In epite of the fact that £*7s of it was in silver, the dustman did not find any of the cake -shop’s bins unusually weighty.

When the rubbish was emptied at the tip a great load of waste coke was deposited on top of it and a roller drawn over it.

To-day the search was on in earnest. From an eai’ly hour 20 volunteers, assisted by the paid services of a bulldozer, dug j and raked and shovelled and from time to time turned over a / blackened coin or battered note. The owner of the hoard stood by anxiously clutching a small canvas bag Into which each find was carefully placed. Without the bulldozer it is doubtful whether the money would have been uncovered. One sweep of the giant blade removed the surface coke waste and a second turned over miscellaneous refuse. Then came rakes and forks, and in a matter of minutes the currency began to appear.
