NEARLY HALF-INCH OF RAIN Nearly half an inch of rain fell at Ashburton during the week-end. Apart from five points on the 19th, this, is the only rain recorded locally during July so far. Though raw early to-day, there was promise of sunshine later. The maximum temperature during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. toAay was 43.6 degrees (compared withAS.l over the previous similar period), and the minimum was 31.2 (24.2). There was a frost of 4.7 degrees this morning and yesterday morning the reading was 5.8 degrees. Earth temperature to-day was 36.5 against 36.4 degrees yesterday morning. Rain during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day was 23 points and for the corresponding 'period ended at 9 a.m. yesterday the fall was 24 points, The barometer to-day was 29.66 inches compared with 29.63 24 hours earlier. >'

General situation: A depression east of New Zealand is moving away, and a ridge of high pressure is moving on to New Zealand. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 5 p.m. to-morrow is as follows: —

Light to moderate variable winds; weather cloudy and cold, with a few showers, but' gradually improving. Sharp frosts to-night. Further outlook: Fair.

SUN AND MOON Sun rose to-day, 7.51 a.m.; sets, 5.23 p.m. Sun rises to-morrow, 7.50 a.m.; sets, 5.28 p.m. Full Moon, August 2, 1.50 p.m. Last Quarter, August 10, 8.22 a.m. New Moon, August 16, 11.12 p.m. First Quarter, August 24, 0.40 a.m.
