MEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
ONE ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, July 17. While at their work in the bush at Mananui, near Ross, this morning, four employees of the Midland Sawmilling Company were struck by lightning, and one of them, John Phillips, 46, married, of Mananui, was admitted to the Westland Hospital in a dazed condition, though he showed some improvement later. Mr Phillips suffered no external injuries, but suffered severely from shock. His condition is reported to be satisfactory. The three other men—Messrs Roger Schist and Thomas Hutchison, bushmen, and Henry Thompson, manager of the mill—were only slightly injured. There had been severe electrical storm, with heavy claps of thunder and vivid flashes of lightning, accompanied by heavy rain, in the. Mananui area throughout the day. Last month some Kumara residents had a Similar experience in a storm in the Kumara district.
