AUSTRALIA AND BRITISH ECONOMIC BURDENS (Rec. 11.5.) LAUNCESTON, This Day! A warning that Australians must be prepared to bear a greater share of the economic burdens of the British Commonwealth was given by the Prime Minister 1 (Mr J. B. Chifley). He said that after the terrific strain of the war Britain was not capable of carrying the burdens she bore in 1939. Australia could not go on asking the United Kingdom to provide dollars for Australia to buy non-essential articles out of the dollar area, and might have to consider soon the question of sterling imports. 1 “Many think that because we have £230,000,000 sterling credits in London we have plenty of money to buy what we like,” he continued. “They will live to be disillusioned. At one time there was a campaign to British, The time may come when wgWjT shall have to give careful thought tusSf what British goods we buy, Britain’s production will have to be saved for exports into dollar areas.”
