TENSION MOUNTING
INDONESIAN CRISIS JOINT CONSTABULARY ISSUE (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright.) (Rec. 12.30 p.ni.) BATAVIA, July 17. Tension has mounted to-day in the Indonesian crisis following another Vain attempt to clarify the Republican Government’s attitude in rejecting Dutch proposals for a joint constabulary, and a demand for the immediate cessation of Republican hostilities. After a meeting this morning with Dr. Van Mook, the Republican ViceMinister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Tamzil, flew to Jogjakarta to confer with the Sjarifuddin Cabinet. Dr. Tamzil later returned to Batavia by air with the Vice-Premier, Dr. A. K. Gani, who carried the official Republican answer to the latest Dutch proposals. “We are standing by our Premier’s radio speech,” Dr. Gani told coi’respondents. He added that the Republicans still rejected the inclusion of Dutch forces in the constabulary, and maintained the viewpoint that this political problem was delaying the Federal Interim Government’s formation, and must first be settled before the Republic made moves to stop hostilities.
