COAL PRODUCTION
COMMONS OPENS DEBATE (Rec. 11.60 a.m.) LONDON, July 17. Opening the House of Common debate on coal production, Mr Ernest Shinwell said that while the improvement in output was not adequate foi needs, the fact had been established that at least as much coal was produced in 1947, in the five-day week as m the six-day week during the corresnonding period of 1946. The Minister revealed that the output of deep-mined coal in ten weeks since the introduction of the five-da> week was 35,420,000 tons compared with 34,731,000 tons for the same per-..-j nf 1946 , Coal production m the #rst 28 weeks of 1947 to July I'2 had been 105,534,000 tons, which was an increase of 4,176,000 tons on the same period of 1946. Coal stocks on July 15 were 10,500,000 tons compared with 8,500,000 tons on the same date m 1 Mr Shinwell said that absenteeism at the mines had decreased since the five-day week was introduced, although he admitted that the figures for June were not as satisfactory as Mr S Hudson said the Opposition believed that Mr Shinwell was a thoroughly bad Minister of Ins Depaitment, and wanted to “sack lnm.
