CROWDING AND FILTH ON MIGRANT SHIP
COMPLAINT ON ARRIVAL AT BRISBANE BRISBANE, July 17. Passengers by the migrant ship Haleakala, which has reached Brisbane from Manila, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, complain of hell-ship conditions. The vessel, which is of 3600 tons, brought 169 immigrants comprising Jews, Spaniards, Czechs, Estonians, White Russians, Americans, British subjects, and stateless refugees. All plan to settle in Australia. . Some first-class passengers complained that though the three weeks’ trip had been advertised as a. luxury cruise, passengers had to live in cramped conditions and filth. An examination by a reporter disclosed that 48 men, women and children lived without privacy in one small dormitory, sleeping in four-tier canvas bunks and without adequate ventilation.
