ASHBURTON-HINDS DRAINAGE
EXPENDITURE OF £14,414
(“Guardian” Reporter) Expenditure on the AshburtonHinds drainage scheme to December 31 last was £14,414, out of a total estimated cost of £90,000, while spoil excavated totalled 135,348 cubic yards, of an estimated total of 248,485 cubic yards. About 20 per cent of the work has been completed.
These figures were reported to yesterday’s meeting of the South Canterbury Catchment Board at Timaru by the engineer, Mr G. R. Milward, who went on to detail the costs of the different di’ains as follow: —
Average costs of digging only to December 31 have been, per cubic yard, as follow 1: Daker’s 2s sd;' Dobson’s 3s lOd, Lower Flemington Is lid, Upper Flemington 2s, Maginess’s Is 6d, Parakanoi Is Bd, Shepherd’s Bush cut-off Is 3d, Srhoy’s 2s lid, Twenty-one 3s sd, Waterton 5s 6d, Wheatstone cut-off Is 7d, Windermere Is 2d. Costs per chain, with the estimate in parenthesis, have been in follows (in £’s): Daker’s 1.78 (3.4), Dobson’s 3.95 (4.4), Lower Flemington 7.05 (5.6), Upper Flemington 3.84 (4.6), Lagmlior Creek 3.76 (4.9), Maginess’s 4.19 (3.5), Parakanoi 5.35 (4.9), Srhoy’s 1.99 ( —), Twenty-one 1.3 (3.4), Waterton 3.4 (4.8), Windermere 3,72 (5.4).
Recent Work Reviewed
The northern divisional engineer, Mr J. S. Houston, reported on the progress of the work, for the period from December 12 to January 17, as follows: Upper Flemington: Distance covered 5190 ft (total now 7 miles 4360 feet). Spoil excavated: 1799 cubic yards. Machine hours: 160 J. Averages per hour: 32.3 feet and 11.2 cubic yards. During the period under review, four hours were spent in crossing the drain and in digging three drinking places for stock.
Windermere: 3700 feet (6 miles 4550 feet), 1242 cubic yards, 101 hours. Averages: 36.6 feet and 12.3 cubic yards.
Maginess’s: 2840 feet (1 mile 2220 feet), 2363 cubic yards, 137 hours. Averages' 20.7 feet and 17.2 cubic yards.' Isolated patches of “ironstone” were encountered arid 5J hours were occupied in digging fords and drinking places for stock. Srhoy’s: 1723 feet (4173 feet), 426 cubic yards, 38 hours. Averages: 45.3 feet and 11.2 cubic yards. Twenty-one: 3030 feet (2 miles 2650 feet), 346 cubic yards, 39 hours. Averages: 77.8 feet and "8.9 cubic yards. Daker’s: 3000 feet (same), 637 cubic yards, 45 hours. Averages: 66.7 feet and 14.2 cubic yards. Waterton: 5720 feet (same), 1545 cubic yards, 101| hours. Averages: 56.2 feet and 15.2 cubic yards. Parakanoi: 1115 feet, 1404 cubic yards, 53 hours. Averages: 21 feet and 26.5 cubic yards.
