NEW "HOME GUARD."
PROTECTION OF FOWLS. SYDNEY, November 9. Nine poultry farmers of Seven Hills, near Sydney, have formed themselves into a home guard to protect their flocks from thieves. With poultry prices soaring, thieves are becoming more and more daring and have almost denuded many small farms. The farmers will stand guard all night in two shifts. Their properties are all in Seven Hills Road. One man will be stationed at each end of the road. Shifts will be from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., and from 2 to 5 a.m. Thieves one night stole 180 three-weeks-old chidks from a brooder not 50 feet from one farmer’s house. The next night they came again and took 74 more. Sometimes older birds are even chloroformed by thieves to prevent them making a noise.
