DRUNK IN CHARGE.

FINE OF £lO IMPOSED. On a charge of having been .found drunk in charge of a motor-car in Wills Street at., about half-past three yesterday, Jim Weir, of 108 Winter’s Road; appeared in the Magistrate’s Court tips morning before Messrs A. H. Fenn and E. C. Bathurst, Justices of the Peace. Weir pleaded guilty and was fined £lO. In addition, his licence Was cancelled and lie was disqualified from obtaining another before July 1, 1944. Senior-Sergeant J. F. Cleary said he saw a motor-car turn from Havelock Street into Baring Square on its incorrect side of the road, the inside wheels of the car being only about two feet from the 'kerb. He was cycling at the time and called to the driver of the ear to stop, but the latter did not do so, and the car went down Victoria Street.

Shortly afterwards witness saw the same car approaching him in Wills Street and he stopped it. Asked why he did not stop when first called upon to do so, Weir, the drivel*, said lie did not know he was wanted to stop. His breath smelled strongly ofiheer and his face was white. At his own request, Weil* was later examined by a. doctor, who pronounced him unfit to be in charge of a motor-car.
