COUNTERING EROSION.
RAILWAY BRIDGE THREATENED. The appearance of a large travelling railway crane on the Ashburton siding has created a considerable amount of interest during the last-two days. This crane is being used to dump large blocks of stone into the. river to form a protective wall on the upstream side of the bridge. The sweep of one of the streams of the river has removed a large quantity of soil from the bank at the northern end of the bridge, andi further erosion here would threaten the approach to the bridge itself. The work is necessarily restricted, to short periods at a time on account of the number of trains passing along the line. "
