THE SUMMER MEETING.

TRENCH FIGHT IN HANDICAP INDIAN CLIPPER. WINS TROT The Ashburton County Racing Club held its summer meeting on the Ashburton racecourse to-day. Very light rain started to fall about 10.30, and the wind from the south-east Avas cool. The rain ceased shortly after midday, but the Aveather remained threatening. Large acceptances Avere received lor most of the events on the programme and the tAvo trots provided big fields. The horses engaged were of good class and some interesting racing Avas seenThe attendance was very good, despite the unpleasant conditions. The track Avas in excellent order.

Soon after the start Urge Avas in the lead and at the entrance to the straight was still in front, Avitli Citizen and Gold Nugget handy. Then there Avere sudden changes and the three winners came out in front in the last hundred yards or so. Divorced came ahead in front from Star Wink Avith Omapo a length back third. Time, 1.1. After the running of tlio race, A. Stokes, rider of Divorced, Avas brought before the steAvards on a charge of interference Avith Star Wink, Urge and Good Scout near the winning post. After hearing evidence, the stewards placed Star Wink first and Divorced second. The steAvards found that the interference Avas accidental as the horse Avas green, but the stewards reprimanded Stokes for careless riding. < MELROSE TROT HANDICAP. Passing the stand soon alter the start, the leaders were Joan Potts, Narvik and Indian ‘Clipper. Along the back Joan Potts and Indian Clipper were together, well out in front. Then, at the entrance to the straight,. Swagger Jack was seen to be closing up, with Joan Potts dropping back. Indian Clipper came on and won bv a length from Swagger Jack, with Nationalist third, three lengths away. Fourth taken by Crackajack, Times: 3.21 3-5, 3.22, 3.22 3-5.

TINIWALD HANDICAP

Going along the hack Mungatoon led the field from Sovereign Lady. Roy Bun soon after was seen to be going up fast and Wardress was making up ground on the outer. Trench Fight pushed ahead in the straight and by twoi lengths boat Roy Bun fo)v first money. Half a. length hack was Wardress in third place, while Sovereign Lady was fourth. Time, 2.5 4-5.

Gay Parade led most of the way in the first stages of the race and coming round to the straight Blue Abbey was leading from Lockheed, with Gay Parade and Princess Minerva in handy places. Down the straight Blue Abbey came to light and won by a nock in a great finish' with Lockheed. A length back was Gay Parade, while fourth place was taken by Prince Ruenalf. Time, 1.41 2-5.
