RAIDS ON ITALY.
IMPROVED STRATEGY PROMISED
LONDON, November (5. In, the House' of Commons to-day Air H. B. Lees Smith (Labour) said the most effective way of helping those nations Italy attacked would be to bomb Italy continuously. The occasional British raids against Italy so far were not air operations but mischievous stunts, because' they warned the enemy of what could be expected and gave him timse to prepare. ‘We should have diverted our bombers -to.soma extent from Germany to Italy,” Air Lees Smith added. Air Churchill replied: “That is our policy. If we had French bases we could act with, great, regularity, but we are compelled to make long flights fiom England over the Alps and around the coast. The weather also interrupts the■■ continuity of operations. We shall endeavour to make amends in the future.”
In the debate that followed several members referred to thei lack of bases in Ireland and the opinion was expiessed that Eire, which existed only because of Britain’s protection, should make her bases available to Britain.
