DEFIANCE PRAISED.

THE WARNING TO THE AXIS.

ANNOYANCE IN JAPAN.

NEW YORK, October 13

Thousands of telegrams poured into White House congratulating Mr Roosevelt on his speech at Dayton (Ohio) in defiance of the dictators. The “New York Times” comments that such evidences of public approval, may influence Mr Roosevelt to transfer “flying fortress” bombers - to Britain. Mr Roosevelt, speaking over the air on i domestic economics, declared: “Events abroad provide a warning. Guns and other weapons of war are insufficient. Wo need grit, sacrifice, and daring. The injunction to love your neighbour animates our faith, which wo are determined shall live and conquer in a world poisoned by hatred and ravaged by war.” .

In an impromptu address to 25,000 people at a. railroad station at Akron, Mr Roosevelt said: “I am confident that we shall be able to avoid being drawn into war by an' attack from somebody else in the Americas; but I also believe that the best way to avoid an attack is to he ready to meet one.” He called for greater speed in rearmament.

All the Tokio newspapers gave pro - minence to Mr Roosevelt’s speech at Dayton with virtually identical headlines: “United States will oppose ThreePower Alliance.”

The newspaper “Yomiuri” says that the address siipports the charge that Mr Roosevelt is provoking war, • and “Nichi Nielli’’ says that the United States is abandoning “alleviation.”
