NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. HORNABROOK AVINS OPEN. AVELiLINGTON, November li. A magnificent round of 68 in the morning, followed by a 72 in the aftornoon, won J. P. Hornabrook .(Masterton) the New Zealand open golf title for 1939. He finished the four rounds with- a total of 291, being closely followed by the Titirangi professional, Alex. ALurray. who, after a brilliant fourth round of 69, returned 294.

Three proessionals followed, Mclntosh, Guy, and Shaw, the margin being eight strokes. Guy provided the sensation of the day with an astounding 31 for the first nine holes in the third round, when ,he played as if iospired. Silk, Glading, AVagg, and Ewen. who are amateurs, all performed a veil to fill the next four places. Amateurs with 322 and better qualified for the championship next Week, and 321 was the figure for professionals. Lambic, the Hastings professional,

may qualify on the-count-back with John Watt (Wellington). Pa<x Smith has finished four strokes under Reilly, whom he beat in the amateur final in 1938 in a. deluge of rain. THE ASHBURTON CLUB, MEDAL MATCH ON SATURDAY. The medal match played by members of the Ashburton Golf Club resulted in a win for E, Brophy with a score of 82, 14—68. Best scores were:— Seniors—E.
