SENIOR GRADE

ASHBURTON Y. OLD BOYS. < Ashburton made a good beginning when the side batted first in the game against Old Boys, played on the Domain Oval. A fine partnership between R. AV. Biggar and A. A. Todd consolidated the position, and Ashburton was able to declare with the total at 191 for eight wickets. The match was drawn. i More than 100 runs for the fourth wicket were compiled bv Biggar and Todd with breezy cricket. Biggar especially dealt severely with all the bowlers, and he was only out to a superlative catch on the boundary by J. Doig. His score of 62 was largely made up of boundaries. Todd was more subdued, but later opened out and finished with 56. Coming on late in the innings, A. Doig took five -wickets with his slow left-hand bowling. Though not really dangerous, his accuracy did not allow the batsmen to score fast without sacrificing wickets. Old Boys batted solidly and succeeded in playing out time. Though few actual chances were missed, the Ashburton fieldsmen lacked anticipation and many balls that left- the ground could have been converted into catches. A Doig batted solidly for Old Boys. Bowling for Ashburton, P. Harper howled finely to take four wickets, but his return should have been much greater. He had all the batsmen in trouble.

IvIA OR A An exciting finish marked the match between Technical Old Boys and Kia Ora on the Technical ground. Down by a large margin in the first innings, Kia Ora in their second strike had four wickets in hand a quarter of an hour before time and seemed likely to stave off an innings defeat. But the Technical howlers, H. Adams and F. Horgan were on tip-top form and quickly disposed of the tail. In the last over of the day Kia Ora lost two wickets giving Technical a well-merited fivepoint win. A feature of the game was a hat-trick by A. McCormick, the Technical bowler, who is again enjoying a successful season. Kia Ora batted first, making only 79, to which S. Kerr contributed 36. Horgan took five wickets for 27, and McCormick four for 35. Technical knocked up 166 for the loss of seven wickets, declared. The top scorer was McCormick, with 43.
