SCENE OF UPROAR.
SEQUEL TO BOXING MATCH. JUDGE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT “BOXER AGAINST WRESTLER.” At the conclusion of the AdamsFoster professional boxing bout in the Radiant Hall last night an almost unprecedented happening in the annals of boxing in Ashburton occurred. So soon as the result was announced as a draw pandemonium prevailed, Adams obviously being selected the winner by the public. One of the judges (Mr J. H. Grigg) immediately entered the ring and endeavoured to make himself heard. It appeared as though the crowd, now worked up to a pitch of excitement, would not listen to him, but wiser counsels prevailed and he was at length accorded a fairly good hearing. Mr Grigg said that as the result of the decision being given as a draw lie was finished with boxing in Ashburton. (Uproar.) That night they had seen a good boxer (pointing to Foster) against a wrestler (pointing to Adams)! The uproar at this announcement was ’deafening, and it was some moments before Mr Grigg could proceed. For his part, he said, he was finished with boxing in Ashburton, a statement which was received with catcalls and booing.
